IE users site is screwing up :o
« on: January 03, 2008, 06:36:33 PM »
I myself am not internet explorer user because i'm smarter then that, but I still realize a huge amount of people use it still. The site works fine under firefox. But visit  www.frag-tube.com   under Internet Explorer (new version or 6.0) and it has a indescribable error that I will just let people see themselves by visiting.

Please help if anyone has had this problem before i could really use the help!  :-\

This is not a bug - Well, perhaps the majority would consider IE a bug, hee hee hee... (actually IE is very buggy - In the news so often).  ;)

This is typical of IE because IE does not follow Internet standards. Suffice it to say, I had the same issue on every single site (working on 4 of them right now). The main issue is how IE interprets CSS and standard code.

I realized (the hard way), that if I was going to customize anything, the best approach was to use the new clean templates kindly provided by oac (see here: http://phpmotion.com/forum/index.php?topic=1327.0). As this will give you a very strong grasp and a solid platform from which to create your own template.

Then make changes as needed and test in all browsers before moving to the next step.

The biggest issue that IE seems to have trouble with is the header and main menu area. You'll have less grief and hair pulling if you just chuck that part out and write your own customized header/menu area.

Re-writing the templates (customizing) to your needs is a lot of extra work, but the result will be well worth it. Obviously you will need xhtml/CSS experience and in some cases php experience would help you!

Have a great weekend!  :)

cameronjcw25, you are absolutely right! Also, the newer IE versions (especially IE7) are terrible (because of IE not following the industry standard  >:( ). For me, I found the only "fix" was to keep the xhtml and CSS code as simple as possible (when creating new templates or changing existing ones), and test in both browsers after each change. That way I could undo the last change if the page did not look correct in IE. Also, another issue I'll do on the next site (to simplify things) is have two CSS files. One is "doctored" for IE and the other for the rest of the browsers. (Using Javascript to detect browser versions). I think that's an idea (a commonly used idea one by-the-way), will work for much of the phpMotion community. Cheers!  :)

I have had the same problems as I am sure its across the board with all IE explorer users. I first want to say that PHP motion is Shows best in Opra, then Firefox. Also that there are similar problems with Safari, go figure.

Anyway, I found that Just informing visitors may be enough for some. I used only the AOL, and IE browsers before coming across Opra and Firefox. I now use Opra most of the time. Its has a lot of conveniences as well as full size browsing.

At this point I would rather avoid IE rather than try to conform to them.
