ProMotion has some major issues
« on: December 14, 2009, 06:50:56 PM »
URL: www.cinemutt.com
PHPmotion v3 with ProMotion template
HOST: hostupon

Since purchasing and loading the ProMotion template, the player has to buffer far too much.  All of my 14 beta testers are telling me the same thing, it has to buffer every 5 - 8 seconds!  This isn't going to cut it.  Any ideas?

Please be sure you are running the latest version of the ProMOTION template.  There was a fix for this isue in the last update: http://phpmotion.com/forum/index.php/topic,12724.msg87152.html#msg87152

Also, be sure to read over the installation instructions that come with the template carefully.  It appears you missed some files when installing.

Not sure what version I have but I just bought it a week ago.

What files did I not upload?

I can tell right away that you didn't upload the index.php file that came with the template.  There may be others.  Best bet is to re-install and make sure you upload everything.   Also, try lowering the buffer time in your siteadmin.

I followed the installation instructions to the letter.  I'm looking at them again and see nothing mentioned about index.php.  Here's a copy of them:

I've uploaded the files for v3.0.10 and reduced the buffering to 3.  I also uploaded the index.php from the Promotion template.  The player still has to buffer just like before, every few seconds.

I just took another look at what version I purchased on Dec. 10th.  It's the current version, so apparently what I had downloaded from you didn't actually have all of the new files.

You're right, that's an old set of the installation instructions that was left in by mistake.  I updated it now so the download has the correct instructions.

Here's what it should have read:

2.Upload the following files/folders to your website's webroot (public_html).   Overwrite existing files.
  • /addons/
  • /classes/
  • /edit/
  • /includes/
  • /javascripts/
  • /skins/
  • /themes/
  • blogs.php
  • emailcompose.php
  • flvplayer.swf
  • grayskin.swf
  • index.php
  • memberprofile.php
  • memberprofile_ajax.php
  • page.php
  • recommendations.php

Try clearing your browser cache.  I just watched several videos on your site to test and not one of them buffered more than 3 seconds at the beginning.

This one for example, buffered just under 3 seconds at the beginning then played the entire video without any issues: http://www.cinemutt.com/videos/8/butler

I cleared the cache, closed all the browser windows, checked my connectivity (1.5M down, 1.3M up) and all of the videos still rebugger every couple of seconds.

I just heard from one of my beta testers who said she's not having any buffer issues, at all!  Now, THAT'S encouraging.  I hope to hear from some others later today.  I can't imagine why I can watch videos from Hulu and others with no problems, but on here I can't.

Incidentally, I just heard from Longtail that they're making some changes that should clear up the issues with any of your templates.  Too cool.

is index.php the major issue that could be having playing issues, because i did a lot of modifications which i mightve not updated "all" of the files that was in the recent promotion release update. Right now i do seem to have some serious slow playing issues even with the buffer fix, so i wanted to know if index.php was the major file

I've read about this issue with the Promotion template, from quite a few people.  I'm thinking the best thing to do is to go back to the default and get a refund for the Promotion.  No one seems to have a fix for this issue that actually works.  Just one of those bugs that can't be squashed without a complete rewrite, I guess.

well i really dont think a template have to do with the speed of the video... if you want to test try switching to the default from the siteadmin and time them and compare

are you sure its not your host? are you on shared?

Index.php has nothing to do with the video playback.

I just heard from one of my beta testers who said she's not having any buffer issues, at all!
I still have no issue with video buffering on your site.  And it seems others are able to watch videos without the buffering on your site as well.

Its starting to sound more like a local problem, or maybe the server you're on just isn't liking pseudo-streaming for some reason.

You can try disabling pseudo-streaming and see if that helps.

No one to my knowledge has complained about this since the update that I released to fix the issue with the video buffer setting.
